Yurok Tribe, True North Organizing Network to Host Virtual Event to Inform Community About the Klamath Promise, a New $30M Promise Neighborhoods Initiative

Yurok girl in regalia [crop of a photo from a 2016 press release from the Yurok Tribe] Press release from the Yurok Tribe: On Tuesday, October 12 at noon, the Yurok Tribe and the True North Organizing Network as well as representatives from the Del Norte Unified School District, the Northern California Indian Development Council and other partner organizations, will host a virtual event to celebrate the recent award of a Promise Neighborhoods Grant which will create a cradle to college & career pathway serving all kids and families in tribal lands and adjacent Del Norte County, the northwesternmost county of California. The US Department of Education recently announced that the Yurok Tribe will receive $30 million to administer this five-year, cooperative undertaking. It was one of only seven awarded in the nation and the only one led by a tribe. The Klamath Promise initiative brings together tribes, schools, community-based organizations, institutes of higher education, local government, and parent & resident groups, to improve educational, health, and developmental outcomes for all children by building a continuum of solutions centered around great schools. Funds will be used to build sustainable supports, services, and programs that will help local children progress toward a satisfying professional career.
