Mashpee Veterans Memorial Project Moves Forward

Mashpee War Memorial In Veterans Garden

The Mashpee Veterans Garden is in the midst of an upgrade that is expected to be completed by Memorial Day. A project to upgrade the Veterans Garden across from Mashpee Town Hall moved ahead with the recent installation of two new flagpoles, one flying the Massachusetts state flag and the other flying the Wampanoag flag.

The installation of the flagpoles is the latest upgrade to the Veterans Garden that, when completed, will include a memorial with a dedication to every Mashpee veteran from every war, from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War.

By Memorial Day, 20 new plaques honoring Mashpee veterans who died in the line of duty will be installed in a circle around the base of the flagpoles, said Richard DeSorgher, a member of the historical commission. The historical commission has spearheaded the project.

A memorial with more than 230 names of veterans from every war is planned, with construction and installation by the fall, Mr. DeSorgher said. That memorial will be located in the park along Route 130, not far from the existing memorial.

“I think it will be a great honor for the veterans of Mashpee to see this when it’s done,” Mr. DeSorgher said.

Mr. DeSorgher said a tremendous amount of work went into the research to find the names of all the veterans who served in Mashpee.

“It was kind of yeoman’s work doing the research, because Mashpee didn’t become a town until 1870,” he said.Records kept by the tribe and researched with the help of tribal member […]
